EDITING

Edits. ALL THE EDITS. Developmental, Line, Copy, and Proofreading. Any and all combinations. We take a custom approach to each manuscript, identifying its strengths and weaknesses, and we will never recommend an edit you don't need.

Developmental Edit (.012/word)

A developmental edit is a “big picture” edit. Many authors skip this, choosing to focus on the nitty-gritty details of grammar and mechanics, instead, but this is perhaps the most important part of your book. This type of edit will help you figure out how to hook your readers and keep them invested, make sure every scene moves the plot along, ensure you’ve adequately built your world, ensure strong character development and bonds between characters, comprehensively illustrate plot arcs and backstories, and so much more. You’ll receive extensive marginal comments, as well as a lengthy editorial letter.

Line Edit (.01/word)

Once the big picture developmental areas have been resolved, I go through your manuscript line by line to assess these areas:

  • Fleshing out scenes for emotional depth
  • Layering in details (action beats, emotion beats, descriptions, et cetera)
  • Trimming scenes to streamline them
  • Inconsistencies with details
  • Consistency of character traits
  • Show vs Tell
  • Fixing awkward, unclear, and unwieldy phrasing
  • Beginning and ending chapter hooks
  • Repetitive words and redundancies
  • Correcting flow and pacing issues

Copy Edit (.009/word)

Copyediting is sometimes thought of as proofreading, but it’s so much more! Here, we check for the following:

  • continuity errors in the storyline
  • Checking well-known facts
  • Ensuring tense continuity
  • Problems with transitions and flow
  • Typos
  • Spelling errors
  • Grammatical errors
  • Inconsistencies in spelling and capitalization
  • Missing or duplicate words
  • Formatting issues (e.g., ensuring that quotation marks face the correct direction, dashes are not rendered as double hyphens, extra spaces are deleted)
  • Chapter numbering

Proofreading (.0075/word)

This is the “safety net” edit, the final check to make sure all the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed.
